“We’ve all seen the various documentaries and news magazine segments attempting to cover the crop circle phenomenon, but virtually all of them have come up short in one way or another. Finally there is a serious, thorough documentary on the controversial mystery, and it’s available on DVD.” Stephen Wagner CircleSpeak is a highly acclaimed, independently-produced feature-length documentary on the history of the British crop circles from 1978 through the 2004 crop circle season. Based on years of research, the film is arguably the most thorough and balanced presentation of the crop circle story ever documented on film. Virtually all of the original British researchers are interviewed and shown in historical video footage, as well as most of the modern day experts, writers and webmasters who report on the latest developments. But it’s not just the researchers who have played a major role in the story. CircleSpeak introduces us to other people the farmers, the police and even several generations of self-proclaimed hoaxers who also claim a share of the crop circle story. The film combines the history of the phenomenon with the unfolding events of one crop circle summer in southern England the 2001 crop circle season. It was a watershed year for the people at the heart of the story. The previous summer had seen some of the most complex and exciting formations ever, and the 2001 season was greeted with the hope of a new millennium and the possibility that real ‘contact’ was at hand. But it also corresponded with the year of Foot and Mouth disease and an epidemic that caused Britain’s agricultural community to close down access to the fields and footpaths of England. This was a tense and dramatic season which culminated, surprisingly, with the largest crop circle formation ever recorded a formation called “the mother of all crop circles.” In addition to the people, CircleSpeak is full of beautiful aerial footage of the major crop circles from the late 1980s through the 2004 season. The filmmakers were fortunate to gain access to American videographer Peter Sorensen’s extensive collection of aerial and ground footage from 1992 to 2004. The DVD is full of beautiful photography of the Wiltshire and Hampshire landscapes that host the majority of the world’s crop circles each summer. “This film comes with high praise from virtually all the leading luminaries from the crop circle research field. I have to agree that it is the most comprehensive documentary on the subject that is out there.” Duncan Fields, Editor After more than 25 years, the crop circles are still an enigma, and the frustrated researchers seem no closer to solving the mystery than in years before. To many believers and researchers, it is the human hoaxing that has contaminated the investigation and confused the public and media. Now more than ever, crop circle country is full of young men (and women) who claim to be part of the underground community of ‘circlemakers’ who are making the crop circles. Because these hoaxers, or ‘circlemakers’, have become an intractable part of the story, CircleSpeak presents their point of view alongside the believers and opens the door to new and intriguing possibilities. Wiltshire psychic Isabelle Kingston recalls channeled information that suggested the human circlemakers may actually be instruments of a greater power. Even the shadowy and distrustful circlemakers talk in the film about their own stories of experiencing paranormal phenomena and seeing strange luminosities while in the fields at night. “ The mark of a good documentary is that it doesn’t offer its own conclusions. And CircleSpeak doesn’t. The film presents the mystery, looks at the best evidence, and listens to those who offer rational answers as well as those who say those answers are not sufficient.” Stephen Wagner There is another controversial subject that is tackled by CircleSpeak. It is the notion that a handful of crop circle researchers and lecturers have become so virulently opposed to any rational discussion or investigation of the human circlemaking that they have created a hostile environment for alternative theories and even for simple truth-telling itself. In the DVD’s extra interviews, Terry Wilson, author of “The Secret History of Crop Circles” laments how this rigid and dogmatic belief-system has driven away people willing to consider a broader range of possibilities. Even the simple act of producing a man-made circle for research purposes, as tried by Ron Russell and Dr. Simeon Hein in the film, is cause for controversy and disdain from the community of believers. “The filmmakers, thankfully, don’t seem to have an agenda and provide a forum for believers and skeptics alike.” Stephen Wagner But above all else, this DVD celebrates the extraordinary story of the crop circles and the pioneering men and women who devoted their lives, often at great sacrifice, to the research, photography, writing and lectures that help the world focus on the extraordinary designs imprinted in the fields of southern England each summer. “The film skillfully skirts all the personal politics, but still manages to capture the big picture of all that has transpired since the late 1980s. NEXUS Magazine “This is truly the best and most balanced presentation I’ve seen throughout my 23 years with this.” Colin Andrews, The filmmakers wanted to ‘raise the bar’ on the quality of crop circle programs and videos that have been covering the story. The film and DVD-extras present a comprehensive, intelligent, warm and respectful investigation into the full range of possibilities that exist in crop circle country. The DVD set combines the feature-length documentary along with many extra interviews and deleted scenes. “Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the danger of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of ‘crackpot’ than the stigma of conformity.” Thomas John Watson There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” Albert Einstein A feature documentary by New Land Films Running time 97minutes
